The elite in European biomechanics in Lyon

From the 10th to the 13th July 2016, the Lyon Convention Centre will be hosting the European Society of Biomechanics convention.

A prestigious meeting that is expected to attract close to 800 participants from all over the world.

Can you give us an overview of the ESB convention?

From the 10th to the 13th July 2016, this  European Society of Biomechanics convention  organized by the  Society of Biomechanics  (made up of French-speaking researchers) will bring together scientists for conferences and exchanges, and present the work conducted by young researchers. 2016 will be the opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of these two learned societies, with an amusing reference: Lyon is where the first Society of Biomechanics convention was held back in 1976.

What fields are covered by the learned Societies of Biomechanics?

Biomechanics is the study of living systems according to the principles of mechanics, with applications that apply to Man, and therefore human health, but also animals and plants…It covers 20 subfields! In the Lyon area, we are involved in four main areas: movement biomechanics, impact biomechanics, the biomechanics of biological tissues and cardiovascular biomechanics.

How did you manage to bring this European convention to Lyon?

This is the result of the hard work carried out by the   Convention Bureau ! To prepare the application file, we worked with them on all aspects related to organizing such an event: we were highly operational with regard to the scientific content, but the Congress Bureau helped us find the right location and organizing partner. The department also helped us promote our  application  by highlighting our scientific know-how, as well as all of Lyon’s assets when it comes to welcoming tourists.

What are the stakes for such an event?

This convention, which involves colleagues throughout the region, increases the visibility of our research laboratories in Lyon as well as Grenoble and Saint-Etienne. On a more holistic level, the event attracts international targets who make the most of the trip to discover the city. Just before the 14th July, it’s the ideal opportunity to visit Lyon: the city’s heritage, gastronomy and its close proximity to the Alps also weighed in the balance of Lyon’s application!
