Joseph Cornell and the Surrealists in New York: Dali, Duchamp, Ernst, Man Ray...

From October 18, 2013 to February 10, 2014 at the Fine Art Museum (Musée des Beaux-arts). One of the season's leading "must-see" exhibitions.

Though little-known in France, this pioneer in the fields of collage, display and assemblage, was one of the brightest stars in the surrealist movement in the USA!

The exhibition  se focalise sur les années 1930-1950, années de maturité de l’œuvre de l’artiste et période clé pour la diffusion du surréalisme aux Etats-Unis…

focuses on the 1930s to the 1950s, when the artist's work was reaching maturity and a period during which Surrealism as an art form was spreading extensively throughout the United States.

We discover his main pieces, but also those of leading artists in the movement including Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst and Man Ray who were based in New York at the time.

From room to room, visitors can discover his characteristic collages, his experimental films and his famous "souvenir boxes": touching and imaginative demonstrations of the surrealist principle of "irrational juxtaposition".

These poetic, glass-fronted boxes take us back to the world of our childhood. A gentle world, with our families and friends and one which we are all too happy to rediscover.
A favourite among these is a box containing blue sand, a seashell and a butterfly, so beautiful that you long to open it!

Following in the footsteps of André Breton and others, this exhibition, a national gem in every sense, provides an obvious opportunity to discover the abundant work of an avant-garde artist who remains insufficiently known by the European public.
